Tattoo Aftercare at Lantern & Moth Tattoo
At Lantern & Moth Tattoo, we want your new tattoo to heal beautifully and remain a stunning piece of art for years to come. The tattooing process doesn’t end when you leave our studio — proper aftercare is just as important as the tattoo itself. Taking the right steps during healing ensures your colors stay vibrant, your lines stay crisp, and your skin remains healthy. Our experienced artists follow strict international hygiene standards, and we encourage you to continue that same level of care at home. Every person’s skin heals differently, but consistent cleaning, hydration, and protection will make all the difference. By following our detailed aftercare instructions, you can prevent infections, fading, and irritation while supporting fast and natural healing. Whether your artist used a Second Skin film or a traditional wrap, both methods can lead to excellent results when properly maintained. Follow the guidelines below carefully to ensure your tattoo heals safely, cleanly, and looks as vibrant as the day it was done.
Aftercare With Second Skin
1. First Step: Keeping the Second Skin On
If your artist applied a Second Skin (protective tattoo film), you may leave it on for up to 3 days, as long as it remains fully sealed and your skin shows no signs of irritation. If the film begins to peel or fluid collects underneath, it’s time to remove it earlier using the steps below.
2. Removing the Second Skin
Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
In a warm shower, wet the film gently to loosen the adhesive.
Peel it slowly from one corner, keeping the motion low and parallel to your skin — avoid pulling it straight upward.
Once removed, discard the film and move on to cleaning your tattoo.
3. Cleaning the Tattoo
Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap using your hands (no washcloths or sponges).
Rinse away any residue or fluid, then pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel — never rub.
4. Applying Ointment
Once the tattoo is completely dry, apply a thin layer of the healing ointment recommended by your artist (such as Bepanthen, Hustle Butter, or Tattoo Goo).
Apply 2–3 times daily, approximately every 8 hours.
Use just enough to lightly coat the tattoo — too much can block airflow and delay healing.
5. Transition to Moisturizer
After your tattoo finishes flaking or scabbing, switch to a light, fragrance-free moisturizer.
Apply once or twice daily until your skin feels normal again.
Continue to keep the tattoo clean, hydrated, and protected.
Daily Aftercare — Do’s
- Always wash your hands before and after touching your tattoo.
- Keep your tattoo clean and dry; treat it as an open wound.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation.
- It’s normal for a small amount of ink or plasma to appear in the first 24 hours.
- If you notice excessive redness, swelling, or discharge, contact us or a medical professional immediately.
Daily Aftercare — Don’ts
- Don’t pick or scratch your tattoo — let flakes fall naturally.
- Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or long baths for at least 2 weeks.
- Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight.
- Don’t apply thick ointment layers or cover the tattoo again unless advised.
- Avoid tight or dirty clothing rubbing on the area.
Aftercare Without Second Skin
1. First Step: Removing the Wrap
If your tattoo was covered with plastic wrap or cling film, remove it after 2–4 hours. Leaving it on too long can trap moisture and delay healing.
2. Washing Your Tattoo
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
Gently clean the area with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
Use your fingers — not a cloth — to remove any plasma, blood, or excess ink.
Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
3. Applying Ointment
Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of the recommended healing ointment.
Use small, even amounts — enough to keep the skin slightly hydrated, not shiny or greasy.
Reapply 2–3 times daily for the first few days.
4. Cleaning & Moisturizing Routine
Continue cleaning and reapplying ointment for the first 4–5 days.
Once the tattoo begins to peel or flake, switch to a fragrance-free lotion instead of ointment.
Keep moisturizing once or twice a day until the skin is fully healed.
Daily Aftercare — Do’s
- Wash your tattoo with clean hands before applying any product.
- Keep it uncovered (unless told otherwise) to let it breathe.
- Wear loose clothing and keep it free from friction.
- Keep the tattoo away from dirt, pets, and rough surfaces.
- Call your artist or doctor if any unusual irritation occurs.
Daily Aftercare — Don’ts
- Don’t touch your tattoo without washing your hands first.
- Avoid tight, sweaty, or dirty clothing on the area.
- Don’t submerge the tattoo in water — showers are fine, baths are not.
- Never pick or scratch at peeling skin.
- Avoid sun exposure or tanning until the tattoo is fully healed.
Healing Timeline
- Days 1–3: Tender, slightly red, may leak plasma or ink — keep it clean and protected.
- Days 4–7: Tattoo starts to peel or flake like a mild sunburn.
- Days 8–14: Itching and dryness begin to subside.
- Weeks 3–4: Skin fully heals; colors will settle and brighten.
Final Note
Every tattoo and every person heals differently.
